I am pregnant, so I need to eat for two…….

The myth of eating for two will leave you with unwanted fat after the delivery of the baby.

The truth is in your first trimester you need not increase your calorie intake,  it might even reduce due to morning sickness so ensure you are taking your vitamins and drinking water.

It may also help to not eat big meals which trigger nausea ,eat small meals throughout the day instead.

By your 2nd trimester, you may find that your appetite has increased but your growing baby only needs 300 more calories to grow adequately.

In practical terms,this would mean adding 2 snacks to your regular 3 square meals.  For example, eating half of an avocado, a handful of almonds, a bowl of oatmeal.

In your third trimester, which is often the busiest from baby showers to doctors appointments, picking up last minute baby supplies, your baby is getting bigger and hungrier  you need to increase your calorie intake by 500 calories, try to eat foods that are rich in iron and a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids.(We gave examples & explained the benefits of good fats already)

If you are carrying multiples, you’ll need to add about 300 calories for each additional baby e.g. With twins, you need 600 calories.

Don’t forget to exercise, check with your doctor before you begin any type of exercises.
Remember you may not be as fast or as active as you used to be and that’s okay pace yourself, take a breather when you need one.
