Please avoid the following foods and drinks to ensure your safety and that of your unborn child.
Luncheon meats, hot dogs
Processed deli meats such as chicken, turkey, salami etc. and uncooked hot dogs and bologna should be completely avoided during pregnancy. These foods are prone to Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that causes listeriosis, which may result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or other serious health problems. Either such meats should be cooked until steaming hot or avoided all together.
Certain seafood & Fish
Large fish such as swordfish, shark, tilefish, and king mackerel despite being a healthy source of Omega-3 fatty acids have concentrated levels of mercury which could damage your unborn baby’s brain and developing nervous system. Opt for safer alternatives like tuna, cod, salmon, shrimp and tilapia which not only provide Omega-3 fatty acids but also have low mercury.
Liver and liver products such as liver pate and sausage have incredibly high doses of vitamin A in them. Concentrated doses of vitamin A have been linked to birth defects. Avoid fish liver oil supplements, multi-vitamin supplements and any other supplement containing vitamin A in it. Monitor the intake of vitamin A and consult a doctor if uncertain about it.
Unpasteurized dairy products
Unpasteurized dairy foods are also prone to listeria.
Avoid raw milk and dairy products made from unpasteurized milk, such as Feta ,Brie, Camembert, Roquefort, blue-veined, Mexican style cheeses like queso blanco, queso fresco, and queso Panela. Avoid any soft cheese that has the label ‘unpasteurized’ on it. Instead go for healthier and safer options like mozzarella and cottage cheese. Avoid drinking raw milk as it can pose health risks to your unborn child. Sheep’s milk, goat’s milk and goat cheese are also known to be linked to Listeriosis.
Other food items to be avoided are Caesar salad dressings, sushi, unwashed vegetables, eggnog and raw cookie dough. Uncooked or raw eggs have been linked to Salmonella poisoning, which poses a huge health threat to your unborn child. Also avoid smoothies with raw eggs in them.
Drinks to Limit or Avoid
Alcohol (beer, wine, or spirits) robs developing cells of oxygen and nutrients, preventing normal fetal development. The effects of alcohol exposure in the womb on intellectual abilities and physical growth are permanent.
Unpasteurized juices, such as cider purchased from roadside stands, at farms, or in stores. These products are prone to germs, including E. coli. Check the label to be sure juice is pasteurized.
Caffeine from coffee, tea, soft drinks, energy beverages, and other sources may increase the risk of miscarriage, reduced birth weight, and stillbirth, but the research is conflicting. The recommended amount of limiting caffeine consumption is 200 milligrams a day. That’s about the amount found in 12 ounces of coffee.
Herbal teas & supplements :Avoid large quantities of herbal tea, and completely avoid herbal supplements. Herbs that contain stimulants or caffeine-containing supplements, especially those that are intended to promote weight loss, guarana, kola nut, betel (Piper betle), Citrum aurantium, yohimbe, theobromine (cocoa extract), Garcinai cambogia. Other botanicals to avoid while pregnant include golden seal, Cascara sagrada, black walnut, wormwood, tansy, pennyroyal, senna, saw palmetto, pao d’arco etc. Avoid local herbal concoctions as well as the exact contents and dosage of such drinks canoot be determined or measured medically.
