Whether or not it is safe to consume pawpaw depends on the ripeness of the fruit. A pregnant woman or a woman trying to conceive should not eat UNRIPE or semi-ripe pawpaw. This is because unripe pawpaw has a latex substance that could cause uterine contractions.
However a well ripened pawpaw contains very little or none; hence is safe for consumption. Due to the benefits mentioned above, some doctors recommend that pregnant women eat ripe pawpaw but in moderation.
Some pregnant women choose to exclude eat pawpaw throughout their pregnancy as there is still some inconclusive research that says it could cause miscarriage or a still birth. Be sure to discuss with your doctor if you are unsure about consuming this fruit in pregnancy.
